He holds affiliate positions in three UCSB interdisciplinary programs: Global and International Studies (GIS), and Marine Studies (IPMS), and is a research associate with the University of California Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies (USMEX) and the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies (CCIS). He received a BA in Spanish Literature (with a minor in Geology) from Bates College and a PhD in Geography from the University of North Carolina, where he also held a NIH post-doctoral fellowship in Biostatistics in the School of Public Health and Carolina Population Center. He has lived, worked, and traveled extensively in Latin America and in over 70 countries worldwide.
