His interests include American studies; Chicano studies; contemporary fiction; critical race studies and the culture of human rights. He is the author of <em>Critical Race Narratives: A Study of Race, Rhetoric, and Injury<\/em>, <em>Rethinking the Borderlands: Between Chicano Narrative and Legal Discourse<\/em>, as well as numerous articles on literature, film, legal studies and cultural theory. He served as department Chair from 2001-2004 and is currently the Director of the Center for Chicano Studies at UCSB. He has also served as the Principal Investigator of a Rockefeller Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (2000-2005).
